Named for a lumber baron's wife

Florence was named for Florence Abbott Hammond, wife of lumber baron A. B. Hammond, who helped secure a Northern Pacific branch line into the Bitterroot Valley. The railway drove the lumber industry and apple growing in the 1910s. Today the Florence-Carlton school district serves students from kindergarten to grade 12. Properties from the orchard era may have old buried lines and hydrants that have been extended many times.
